I think Well I had my first "rodeo" about a year ago and I can tell you for a fact that if you don`t have some sort of "control" of these afore mentioned devices you won`t have squat!
Hopefully you don`t have a Hecules controller. They`ve been discontinued for a number of years. When I was searching for one, I was told by a good source a compatable replacement could be had for $500. That was awhile back, so the price probably rose!
In a nutshell, have this component professionally checked before you start purchasing all the additional "plug ins"

You have two things you need to make work. The pump and the heater... First, see if you can get the pump to work... if it does you are half way there... a really weak flow usually means the impeller is spent. you can rebuild the impeller and reattach it to the motor. Now, see if the heating element works... if it is electric, you are set... those are generally easier to fix... just replace the elements. If it has a gas heater, and the pilot wont stay lit, you have a bad thermocoupler (device that tells pilot to remain lit.)

as long as the tub holds water, and the piping is in good shape, the things you want to do should not be too hard for a guy who is good with his hands. If the pump motor is shot, this will likely be the most expensive part to replace...
good luck
